In the present-day name of this town gives a clue, what can be found in the region surrounding Germa.
There are speculations, that about one thousand years before Christ the Garamant Empire evolved here. Emanating from their capital Garaman, they dominated the Fezzan basin and they successfully fended off the Romans and Greek.
Traces of the capital of this civilization are found near today’s Germa.
Although this was about high civilization, which established the wheel for example in this region and possessed a progressive irrigation system, today just very little is known about this people. The ruins around Germa and the petroglyphs of fighters in chariotries in Akakus however are relics of the Garamant, which were found and are allowed to be visited.
